North Port's Legacy Trail breaks ground Monday, 'everybody's super excited'

 https://www.yoursun.com/northport/news/north-ports-legacy-trail-breaks-ground-monday-everybodys-super-excited

  • Updated
  • NORTH PORT — The city’s portion of Sarasota County’s Legacy Trail breaks ground Monday.

North Port’s Legacy Trail Connector will be nearly 4 miles of paved trails. Two other routes in North Port are planned: The South Powerline, which is an improved shell-packed road, and a more natural trail surface through Deer Prairie Creek Preserve.

The North Port package of trails is part of Sarasota County’s Legacy Trail, a $65 million project funded in a 2018 voter referendum. Some 400,000 annual users reportedly use the Legacy Trail that connects Sarasota, Osprey, Nokomis, Venice and South Venice.

The trail is a wide, smoothly paved path for walkers/joggers, rollerbladers and bicyclists. There are trailheads, parking areas and seating along differing route distances.

North Port’s Connector is “one of the most exciting things as a parks director,” said Nicole Rissler, executive director with Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources.

The bigger picture is linking Florida in a so-called rails-to-trails movement of walking and biking trails. Many of those trails are converted rail lines, hundreds of miles criss-crossing the state, linking cities, providing transportation alternatives, drawing visitors and boosting eco-tourism.

A North Port Connector will run nearly 4 miles of paved pathways along the Deer Prairie Creek Preserve, “where one can go to experience native habitats, including pine flatwoods, prairie hammocks, and seasonal wetlands,” according to information on the Friends of Legacy Trail website. That nonprofit was started in 2016 to further The Legacy Trail, a Sarasota County park.

“Once the connector gets to North Port, it’ll be a wonderful asset to our community here,” Friends of the Legacy Trail-North Port coordinator Sharon Donovan had said.

The Legacy Trail's North Port Connector ground-breaking is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday at 1045 Calera St., at the end of West Price Boulevard.

    Those three connections are:

    • Powerline Trail, connecting Border Road through the Carlton Reserve and Big Slough Preserves to Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park.

    • Deer Prairie Creek Route, connecting the east end of Forbes Trail to the south entrance of Deer Prairie Creek. That starts Monday.

    • Schewe Route running along Interstate 75 before turning south and eventually connecting with Warm Mineral Springs. North Port city commissioners this month approved a $9.2 million upgrade package at the Springs with the Legacy Trail as a future component.

“A different experience in different parts” of the Trail, Rissler said. “Everybody’s super excited.”

Sarasota County’s original Legacy Trail dates to around 2004. The county bought a former railroad corridor for about $12 million. That 12.5-mile project runs from Sarasota to Venice. It is popular with walkers, bikers, inline skaters and others; so popular, in fact, that devices had been added along the trail to count daily users.

Trail use in the last year had exploded, Donovan said, “indicating a great interest in outdoor recreation, especially during the pandemic, when people are looking for safe things to do.”

North Port’s mayor had long pushed for a connecting trail to the city, in her time having covered “every inch” of the Legacy Trail, riding, rollerblading and walking it, Mayor Jill Luke said.

“It’s outdoors, it’s nature,” she said. “I love it.”

North Port Connector ground-breaking is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday at 1045 Calera St., at the end of West Price Boulevard.

    Get Ready To Ride

    https://www.yoursun.com/venice/get-ready-to-ride/article

      3/5/2020

SARASOTA — The annual Tour de Parks bike ride is set for Sunday, March 22.

It is coordinated and staffed by Friends of The Legacy Trail, Sarasota Manatee Bicycle Club and Sarasota County.

The ride is a fundraiser for the Legacy Trail, a Sarasota County Park, and its trail connectors.

The ride starts and finishes at the historic Venice Train Depot, 303 East Venice Avenue, in Venice. Participants have the option to do a 21-mile, 35-mile, or 62-mile ride along The Legacy Trail and to other parts of the county. The ride goes through or passes 12 parks along the route and provides a beautiful, scenic experience for cyclists of all levels.

“This immensely popular ride gives cyclists an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, get to know the cycling routes in the area, and raise funds for an important cause,” said Bud Gaunce, event director and past president of the Sarasota Manatee Bicycle Club.

This is the 10th year of the ride, which raises funds to support amenities for The Legacy Trail, such as the new South Creek Stop Station and Learning Area which opened in November 2019 in cooperation with the Jelks Foundation and the replacement of yellow 911 emergency markers.

Those markers are spaced every 20th of a mile along the entire length of The Legacy Trail as well as the Venetian Waterway. Last year’s event had more than 950 riders.

Friends of The Legacy Trail, Inc. is an all-volunteer 501©(3) nonprofit organization based in Sarasota. FLT exists to support, promote, enhance, and protect The Legacy Trail, a Sarasota County Park, and its trail con- nectors now and for future generations. It has nearly 1,000 individual, family, and business members.

West Villages Realty Broker Spotlight: Ali Johnston

A vision served by a higher purpose. A team driven by higher standards. A focus on outstanding, personalized service. When I began West Villages Realty years ago, we set out to create a different type of brokerage. One that offers customers greater insights into the construction and home selection process. A better-informed approach through an elite squad of local area experts. Agents who treat customers as allies rather than quotas.

As the third generation to call Venice home, I’ve been delighted to see the surge of growth in our area. West Villages has become one of the top 5 selling master planned communities in the nation. For good reason - the amenities, location, beautiful array of floor plans, quality construction - they all paint a picture that is the ultimate Florida lifestyle. From consulting throughout the entire journey to helping compare resales vs new construction, we examine data that others may not. This was my vision from the start - to better inform each customer through a deeper sense of knowledge and guidance. Customers need Agents who can help them understand all of their options while home sellers need a guide who can help them compete with new construction. From our origins as a 2-person office to our team today, this is the difference we’ve delivered, and we’ve been proud to have won the Sarasota-Herald Tribune’s Venice Readers’ Choice Award for the last 3 years in a row - a tribute proving our customers agree.

As a West Villages resident, I actively attend local government and district proceedings and provide a blog to help my team, customers, and community stay up-to-the-moment on our area. My passion for knowledge has been a lifelong pursuit. Every step of my education and career has informed the vision with which I started West Villages Realty and prepared me to lead the team I do today. From earning my Associate’s in Drafting at Tulane to my MBA in Real Estate Finance, providing a higher degree of market intelligence with customer care are hallmarks of every relationship we serve.

Thank you in advance for considering West Villages Realty as your dedicated partner in life’s most exciting pursuit - finding your dream home.

West Villages Realty Agent Spotlight: Judy "J.R." Smith

When I said, “I do” to my husband many years ago, I said yes to one incredible life of adventure serving in the US military. And it was then that I was introduced to my first aspects of real estate. I helped families just like ours relocate and adjust to military life away from home.

It was a role I naturally took to. I was raised to always appreciate and respect others, and whether i was volunteering in the Red Cross, a mission I’ve been proud to have served for more than 40 years, or helping explain the ins and outs of what being a military spouse was all about, shooting straight with the families who came into my life speaks to my overall philosophy - be the reason someone smiles, make improvements - not excuses, and if you believe strongly in something, it’s worth fighting for.

My love for real estate and helping others also helped lead me to owning and operating my own personal home management company in New Jersey where I was able to work closely with property owners, customers, other Real Estate Agents, and contractors. Together, my military experience and time as a property manager in the field helped expose me to a rich array of details that come into every aspect of buying and building quality homes that I guide my customers with today.

When it came time for me to make the wonderful transition to Florida, I was looking for a team where I could not only use all my talents and passion for service, but also a group that shared my standards for excellence. When I discovered West Villages Realty had won first place for ‘Best Choice For Readers in Venice’ by the Herald-Tribune, that was my first indication I had found a new home for my talents.

And, I’m very happy to say, my instincts were right. My tenure with West Villages Realty has been wonderful. Through them, I’ve earned certifications in Pricing Strategies and as an Accredited Buyer Representative, and continue to educate myself in all aspects of the real estate process. Every day offers the opportunity to work side-by-side with my Sellers and Buyers on journeys filled with decisions I help answer through my experience, research I perform on the market, deep local area knowledge, and personal attention.

I’ve built my entire life on a mission of service. Let me help you discover the Florida life style you and your family deserve.

West Villages Realty Agent Spotlight: Shelley Jennings

As the first Agent West Villages Realty brought onboard, I’m proud to have helped define a culture of caring for our customers.  And while that was some time ago, the tenets of integrity and compassion still guide every action I take . Each home offered, and relationship I serve, is built on a solid foundation of understanding, meeting, and hopefully exceeding, your expectations.

Many of my customers, just like myself,  are making the transition from the North. And I think, “What would I need to know about the area?”  “Where is the right spot to call home?” “How can I be sure of all the details during the construction process?” And truly seeing the situation from my customers’ eyes helps me provide a deeper level of guidance throughout every step of  the journey we take together.

In fact, it’s often a process that starts long before you’ve even stepped foot into these beautiful communities. My customers are often touched by my “local area” dossiers and information I’ll send to them in advance of us meeting face-to-face. But the relationships I forge not only span great distances. They also stand the test of time. Nothing brings me more joy than staying in touch with my customers I’ve helped.

Every decision to be made in the dream home process, and let’s face it, there are many, not only comes with my advocacy, experience and guidance. They also come with my sense of personal responsibility. I’m proud to have received the distinguished credentials of both Pricing Strategy Advisor and Accredited Buyers Representative from the National Association of Realtors, and I apply these certifications for every customer I represent.

Some say I’ve got the heart of a teacher. While others, the stamina of a marathon runner. But all I know is I simply love what I do, and that’s helping you make the most exciting move of your life. Let’s make your new home vision, reality together.
