Deep dives to Green Banana

 https://www.yoursun.com/venice/deep-dives-to-green-

  •

A diver indicate he's doing OK as he and another diver descend to Green Banana-about 400 feet down and 50 miles west of Venice-essentially a cave at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.          PROVIDED BY FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY

About 50 miles west of Venice, a team from four organizations worked to send scientists down hundreds of feet below the surface to explore a blue hole called Green Banana.

Little was known about the blue holes, but more is being learned now.

The week-long expedition in September has already provided information that has changed some initial thoughts.

It was led by Mote Marine Laboratory scientist Emily Hall with assistance from Jim Culter along with teams from Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, Georgia Institute of Technology and the U.S. Geological Survey.

FAU supplied some of the “citizen scientist” deep sea divers, including Marty Watson, lead diver on the expedition.

“I’ve developed a reputation in the diving community of being one of the deepest divers ever — that’s still alive,” Watson said. “I’ve been well-known to do a lot of salvage stuff at very deep depths. I’ve had the ability to do the projects that people thought couldn’t be done.”

He did an “exploratory” dive a few days before the expedition began — having a team member a few hundred feet above him as he did a looksee into Green Banana. And there were a few surprises at about 415 feet down in the back of the cave.

“Lots of fishing lines and lures,” he said.

He’s not sure how they got there — just that they were momentarily problematic and unexpected.

He explored the area and looked around the cavern.

“The visibility was really bad — the best, 10 feet,” he said. “It’s less stressful when you’re alone in harsh conditions. It’s easier to be alone in some cases.”

Watson and David DeBerard returned a few days later to establish the 600-pound benthic lander that took samples and other scientific readings from Green Banana.

And they weren’t the only living thing near the cave.

“There’s hardly anything alive at that depth ... did see a shell crab at about 400 feet. He was walking around and having a good ole’ time,” Watson said, laughing as he recalled it.

Watson, 48, previously worked with Mote Marine and other groups in 2019 when they worked Amberjack Hole which is about 350 feet deep. He’s always onboard to go overboard for science, he said.

He got his first license as a teenager in 1991.

“And it never stopped. It was always a dream of mine to become another Jacques Cousteau.”

Stephannie Kettle, with Mote Marine, said a lot of information is being gleamed by scientists.

“They are still pouring through the samples,” she said.

Another exhibition is slated for May 2021, weather dependent.

But they are realizing a few things already. Blue holes are not all the same. They had anticipated the caves at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico would be similar in many ways.

“The makeup and some of the chemistry and water flow are definitely different,” she said.

Kettle said, with the many different groups and dealing with weather, it was “as smooth as something as big an undertaking as this is can be.”

“Everyone works together to accomplish these tasks during 12-hour days for five days in a row is really cool,” she said.

Mote Marine has started a blog at its website for people interested in learning about the exhibition and science from it, Kettle said. It’s at www.mote.org/deepthoughts.

Hall was the first scientist to write to the blog about the experience. She notes how she felt about the diving in her first blog.

“I really enjoy seeing the plans come together,” Hall writes online. “The diving is AMAZING!!! and I’ve gotten to meet some super cool citizen scientists (our dive team volunteers) throughout this process. Seeing the data and trying to tell a story is also very rewarding.”

For Watson, the reward is assisting.

“Anything I can do to help science, even as a volunteer, that’s what it’s about. That’s what we do. Anything to help research,” he said.

And its “definitely” never another day at the office, he said. But it went well.

“We did our job and gave (scientists) the opportunity to gather the data they needed to gather.”

He called exploration his “fuel.”

“I want to go to places where no one else can go and I like to support science,” Watson said. “To see what’s going on underneath the ocean floors — and I can get there. If I can help these people, I want to help them. And that’s my fuel.”

And he has his own theories on blue holes.

“I think there’s an aquifer below the Gulf of Mexico and below the Atlantic. ... We’ve proved that there’s a flow — below these. This isn’t just a pit. There is an aquifer. And it has to be tied to our drinking water.”

He thinks that’s important to know.

Watson is an expert in cave diving and has explored a variety of wrecks, including World War II German U-boats and 1800s shipwrecks in the Gulf of Mexico.

Exploration may be his fuel, but there is another thing going on when he’s places that no human has gone before.

“The things I’ve witnessed and got to see: It’s indescribable,” he said.

Snowbird sightings ...Let the season begin

https://www.yoursun.com/venice/arts_entertainment/snowbird-sightings-let-the-season-begin

By Kim Cool, October 15, 2019

VENICE — Although some early birds have arrived, Snowbird Season officially begins this weekend with an event sponsored by Womens Sertoma of Venice.

Some would say the weekend actually begins Thursday with the Venice Wine feast on South Nokomis Avenue between West Venice Avenue and Miami Avenue.

Tickets had to be purchased in advance at Venice Wine & Coffee. For those with tickets, it begins at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Paired with the three-day Sun Fiesta, the WineFeast makes for a total of four days of festivities to kick off Snowbird Season — all thanks to the city’s two Sertoma clubs.

Tickets are not necessary for the Sun Fiesta but definitely bring money. In addition to hamburgers, hot dogs, gyros and more, there will be Sun Fiesta T-shirts and posters that have become coveted collector items over the years as well as all sorts of other items in arts and crafts booths at Centennial Park, site of the weekend festivities.

You might also bring a favorite folding chair for comfortable seating during some or all of the entertainment events. From the Sun Fiesta Parade and Bed Races on Saturday morning to the talent exhibitions, the Miss Sun Fiesta pageant and more, most attendees will want to sit a spell to see some or all of those events.

The fiesta definitely has grown over the years.

Now in its 46th year, Sun Fiesta has been a project of Women’s Sertoma since 1994. The annual event begins at 5 p.m. Friday in Centennial Park and continues at 7 p.m. Sunday.

The other Sertoma Club will supply plenty of helpers to the weekend event, including its popular hamburger booth.

WineFeast proceeds support the nonprofit Sertoma Club of Venice Speech Clinic, which identifies and corrects speech deficits early in life when relearning the formation of words is easiest, regardless of the ability of the child’s parents to pay.

Sertoma’s mission is “for the high and noble purpose of SERvice TO MAnkind by communication of thoughts, ideas and concepts to accelerate human progress in health, education, freedom and democracy.”

Charities supported last year by Women’s Sertoma include: All Faiths Food Bank, Child Protection Center, Christmas Shopping for Families in Need, Family Promise of South Sarasota County, Friends of the Venice Public Library, InStride Therapy Inc., Literacy Volunteers of South Sarasota County, Loveland Center, Sertoma Club of Venice/Sertoma Speech Clinic, Shop With A Cop, Sky Family YMCA Preschool, Southeastern Guide Dogs,

Special Olympics Florida Sarasota County, Student Leadership Academy, The Twig, The Warehouse of Venice Inc., Venice Area Mobile Meals, Inc., Venice Art Center, Venice High School Renaissance, Venice Symphony Children’s Program, Women’s Resource Center/Venice.

Sun Fiesta is the club’s primary source of income for the charities named above and for most of the club’s scholarship fund. The other Sertoma club accepts men and women.

Residents have loved Sun Fiesta since the beginning when it was simply the last hurrah before the arrival of the winter visitors for what has become the busiest time of year in Venice. These days, many Snowbirds come early to participate in the fun.

Saturday’s early morning parade and bed races bring people downtown early Saturday morning, with many staying on for most of the day to buy their T-shirts and posters and see the entertainment and watch the Miss Sun Fiesta pageant. Kids love the Kids Korner. There is something for everyone in this annual event.

While Sertoma members are there for hours on end as volunteers, a huge percentage of attendees also tend to make a day of it — or longer. Music and entertainment continues each day and evening until closing.

With all the arts and crafts and food vendors there is plenty to see, do and consume.

The naming of a Miss Sun Fiesta queen includes scholarship awards for the top three winners. Entrants are aged 17-21 and must have a 3.5 or higher GPA, have received honors in academics and/or sports and completed at least 75 hours of community service. The event is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

C. J. Fishman will be the event’s emcee once again. Judges from the community include Andrea Arnold, Julie Buckler, Toni Maggio, Sandi McGowen and Bob Vedder.

Entrants will be judged on a written essay, public speaking, stage presence, personality and community service. The winner receives a $2,000 scholarship; First Runner-up receives a $1,000 scholarship, and Second Runner-up receives a $750 scholarship.

Vee Garry-Chiuli is the pageant chairman, assisted by Barbara Thompson and Cindy Sproehnle as co-chairs. The event will be Saturday afternoon.

On Sunday, there will be a 5K run or walk — entrant’s choice. Registration is from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. behind Venice Theatre. The race begins at 8 a.m. and takes participants along the Venice Waterway to and from the Venetian Waterway Trail head behind the theater. The race is limited to 300 participants. Each finisher will receive a custom medal — yet another collectible Sun Fiesta souvenir. Awards will be presented in Centennial Park after the race. Registration fee is $35.

For all Sun Fiesta details regarding events, times and locations, pick up a Sun Fiesta Business Guide/Program. This is one event in which a program is more than a souvenir. It is a necessity.

Music will include appearances by The Troupadors, Sophisticated Swing and Bandana. Check the program booklet for performance times.

Sun Fiesta hours are from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. The fiesta’s rain dates are Oct. 26-27.

The Venice Gondolier is the event’s long-time media sponsor.

West Villages Realty Agent Spotlight: Judy "J.R." Smith

Judy Rae Smith, but you can call me “J.R.”
Licensed Florida Real EstateAgent

Email: jr@westvillagesrealty.com

When I said, “I do” to my husband many years ago, I said yes to one incredible life of adventure serving in the US military. And it was then that I was introduced to my first aspects of real estate. I helped families just like ours relocate and adjust to military life away from home.

It was a role I naturally took to. I was raised to always appreciate and respect others, and whether i was volunteering in the Red Cross, a mission I’ve been proud to have served for more than 40 years, or helping explain the ins and outs of what being a military spouse was all about, shooting straight with the families who came into my life speaks to my overall philosophy - be the reason someone smiles, make improvements - not excuses, and if you believe strongly in something, it’s worth fighting for.

My love for real estate and helping others also helped lead me to owning and operating my own personal home management company in New Jersey where I was able to work closely with property owners, customers, other Real Estate Agents, and contractors. Together, my military experience and time as a property manager in the field helped expose me to a rich array of details that come into every aspect of buying and building quality homes that I guide my customers with today.

When it came time for me to make the wonderful transition to Florida, I was looking for a team where I could not only use all my talents and passion for service, but also a group that shared my standards for excellence. When I discovered West Villages Realty had won first place for ‘Best Choice For Readers in Venice’ by the Herald-Tribune, that was my first indication I had found a new home for my talents.

And, I’m very happy to say, my instincts were right. My tenure with West Villages Realty has been wonderful. Through them, I’ve earned certifications in Pricing Strategies and as an Accredited Buyer Representative, and continue to educate myself in all aspects of the real estate process. Every day offers the opportunity to work side-by-side with my Sellers and Buyers on journeys filled with decisions I help answer through my experience, research I perform on the market, deep local area knowledge, and personal attention.

I’ve built my entire life on a mission of service. Let me help you discover the Florida life style you and your family deserve.

West Villages Realty Agent Spotlight: Shelley Jennings

As the first Agent West Villages Realty brought onboard, I’m proud to have helped define a culture of caring for our customers.  And while that was some time ago, the tenets of integrity and compassion still guide every action I take . Each home offered, and relationship I serve, is built on a solid foundation of understanding, meeting, and hopefully exceeding, your expectations.

Many of my customers, just like myself,  are making the transition from the North. And I think, “What would I need to know about the area?”  “Where is the right spot to call home?” “How can I be sure of all the details during the construction process?” And truly seeing the situation from my customers’ eyes helps me provide a deeper level of guidance throughout every step of  the journey we take together.

In fact, it’s often a process that starts long before you’ve even stepped foot into these beautiful communities. My customers are often touched by my “local area” dossiers and information I’ll send to them in advance of us meeting face-to-face. But the relationships I forge not only span great distances. They also stand the test of time. Nothing brings me more joy than staying in touch with my customers I’ve helped.

Every decision to be made in the dream home process, and let’s face it, there are many, not only comes with my advocacy, experience and guidance. They also come with my sense of personal responsibility. I’m proud to have received the distinguished credentials of both Pricing Strategy Advisor and Accredited Buyers Representative from the National Association of Realtors, and I apply these certifications for every customer I represent.

Some say I’ve got the heart of a teacher. While others, the stamina of a marathon runner. But all I know is I simply love what I do, and that’s helping you make the most exciting move of your life. Let’s make your new home vision, reality together.

Will you be stocking up during Florida's hurricane tax-free holiday?

By VICTORIA VILLANUEVA-MARQUEZ Staff Writer  May 28, 2019
https://www.yoursun.com

With Florida’s hurricane season approaching, residents will soon be able to stock up on generators, flashlights and other supplies without paying sales tax.

Gov. Ron DeSantis recently signed a tax holiday into law that exempts certain disaster preparedness supplies from sales tax starting May 31 through June 6.

The exemption applies to items such as self-powered radios, bungee cords, tarps and ratchet straps that are selling for $50 or less. Other exempt items include gas and diesel fuel tanks that are priced at $25 or less, and flashlights, lanterns and candles that are sold for $20 or less.

Car and boat batteries do not qualify for the tax exemption, but AA, AAA, C, D, 6-volt and 9-volt batteries that are selling for $30 or less will be tax-free. Non-electrical ice coolers that cost up to $30 will also be exempt.

Plus, portable generators that are sold for $750 or less will not be subject to sales tax.

For a complete list of qualifying items, visit FloridaRevenue.com/DisasterPrep.
