Cities in Sarasota-Manatee Keep Growing

North Port Continues To Post The Biggest Population Gains, According To The Census.

Updated U.S. Census data released this week show all nine municipalities in Sarasota and Manatee counties continuing to expand their populations, with North Port still seeing the most year-over-year gains.

As of July 1, 2017, North Port could count more than 10,000 residents more than the city of Sarasota – again making it the largest municipality in Sarasota County and the Sarasota-Manatee region.

North Port’s population totaled 66,300 as of that date, a 2.8 percent increase over the 64,439 reported a year earlier and nearly 15.5 percent greater than the 57,404 the bureau counted in mid-summer 2010.

Plans for an aquatics center for which the city recently accepted bids and, in the West Villages sector, ongoing construction of a $100 million Atlanta Braves spring training complex continue to add to the appeal of the city – which has long been considered more affordable for many area working families.

What That Means to West Villages:

This growth doesn't even include communities like Sarasota National and Grand Palm, which are unincorporated Sarasota County, or The Preserve and Oasis at the West Villages that are newly opened. Also, Renaissance at the West Villages was so new in Spring of 2017 that though it saw home sales, there were no closed home purchase transactions by the end of the period mentioned (July 1, 2016, to July 1, 2017).

Gran Paradiso alone had nearly 270 new homes close during this period, and IslandWalk likely around the same (as year over year, the two communities numbers have been quite similar for the past few years). Then, figuring population estimates with average household size (assumably between 1.9 and 2.5 for the West Villages*), it looks like the West Villages District may be by far the most significant contributor to population growth for North Port during that time frame.

Pretty exciting for our little piece of paradise!

As always, thanks for reading.

*Assumption comes from household averages of Census Bureau info for North Port (2.65), Venice city (1.81), and South Venice (2.35).

Article from https://www.srqmagazine.com/srq-daily/2018-05-07/8309_Adams-Group-Tapped-for-Braves-Spring-Training-Complex

BY SRQ DAILY MONDAY BUSINESS EDITION MONDAY MAY 7, 2018

"The City of North Port has announced that already the positive impact of the Atlanta Braves spring training relocation to North Port is being felt on the local economy. Adams Group, one of North Port’s top manufacturers, has been selected by the Tandem Construction + Barton Malow Company team to join in the construction of the upcoming Atlanta Braves Spring Training Complex in North Port. The Complex is currently under construction in the 9,600-acre master-planned community of the West Villages area of North Port and is projected to open in time to host the Braves’ final game of the 2019 spring training season. This $125 million public-private project will include the main stadium, a clubhouse for major and minor league players, offices, multiple training fields and, of course, all necessary parking spaces and site beautification. With this new project at the North Port spring training facility, the company is expected to create more jobs at their North Port headquarters, which is located at the North Port Park of Commerce."

    Venice Museums Day

    Venice Museums Day

    • Date:05/19/2018 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
    • Location:Triangle Inn, 351 Nassau St. S.; Lord-Higel House, 409 Granada Ave.; and Historic Venice Train Depot, 303 E. Venice Ave.

In honor of International Museum Day, three historic sites in Venice invite families to come explore the rich historical resources these institutions provide to the community.
In keeping with this year’s theme of “Hyperconnected Museums: New Approaches, New Publics,” the Venice Museum & Archives in the Triangle Inn, 351 Nassau St. S.; Lord-Higel House, 409 Granada Ave.; and Historic Venice Train Depot, 303 E. Venice Ave.; are reaching out to area residents and families outside of the historic area of Venice so these “new publics” can discover the benefits of these museums.

This free event takes place on Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each site will be open and offer activities for the whole family. A free trolley shuttle will run continuously between the three sites, allowing visitors to start at any site and get on and off to visit each museum.
The Venice Museum & Archives will offer balsa wood kits for kids to make their own World War II-era fighter planes like the ones that used to be at the Venice Army Air Base, design and create a shark tooth necklace, and have a photo op for social media with “Dr. Fred Albee and Bertha Palmer.”
Venice Heritage Inc. will give tours and information on the Lord-Higel House, the second-oldest house in Sarasota County, and have basket-weaving demonstrators and period games for kids.
The Venice Area Historical Society, with "railroad" people on the Depot campus, will present children’s storytime readings about trains, provide presentations on the secrets of the train depot restoration, and offer a scavenger hunt on features about the Rollins Coakley Railroad Park.
For more information, call the Venice Museum at 941-486-2487.

      Both Hospitals Approved in Venice

Sarasota Memorial and Venice Regional Hospitals receive approval to built in Venice

VENICE, FL (WWSB) - After $30 million dollars in upgrades to Venice Regional Bayfront Health Hospital, CEO Bob Moore is ready for a new building. "It's like remodeling an old house vs building new. You get into it and it costs you more and more and more to bring it up to today's standards."

Venice Regional owns land at Jacaranda Boulevard and Venice Avenue. They want to build an acute care hospital there… leaving only an Emergency Room on the Island of Venice.

"It's just going to be a more organized facility. If we knew what we knew today, 67 years ago, this hospital would look a lot different when it was built," Moore said.

Not far down the road and one interstate exit away, Sarasota Memorial wants to build a hospital on Laurel Road. "This hospital is a very large hospital, but it is very full right now." CEO David Verinder says the main campus is getting cramped… plus, many of SMH's patients live in south county. "We have patients that are driving 45 minutes, an hour and a half from south county and other parts even further south from that to come up to this hospital."

Florida's Agency for Healthcare Administration, or AHCA, decides where hospitals can be built. Both hospitals requested and originally received approval to build their new facilities. But, a legal battle ensued over who should be allowed to build… just this week an administrative judge gave both hospitals the green light.

"I think it will raise the quality of care in the community by having competition. We have people who choose us, we have people who choose Sarasota Memorial now," said Moore.

The sense of competition between both hospitals may only just be getting started.

"I have no problem with them having a hospital an exit away. I welcome it because I think that makes everyone just that much better," Verinder said.

AHCA does have to give final approval although both CEO's feel confident AHCA will give it, since the agency has given the approval in the past.
