The Venice Area Orchid Society will present their 54th annual orchid show and sale at the Venice Community Center, 326 S. Nokomis Ave., on Feb. 1-2.

Show hours are 10am-5pm on Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sunday.  Admission is $5; children under 10 free.

Thousands of blooming orchids will be for sale and on display in 11 artistically designed exhibits. Orchid art, accessories and supplies will also be for sale. Free classes. Widely regarded as the most popular orchid show on Florida's west coast.

Dust off your baseball caps and join the block party on Miami Avenue in downtown Venice on Saturday, February 8, 2020 from 5 to 10 p.m. to kick off the beginning of spring training in Mardi Gras style. Hosted by Venice MainStreet in partnership with the Atlanta Braves Spring Training Organization, the evening will be filled with fun activities for the whole family.

Kids activities include inflatable corn hole and face painting, plus food and drink trucks, Mardi Gras merchandise, plus much more add to the excitement of the event. Braves player, Andruw Jones will be in attendance for a meet and greet. The Grammy award winning Rebirth Brass Band, a New Orleans institution, will transport attendees to the streets of the French Quarter, with its combination of traditional instrumentation with funk, hip-hop, soul, and other modern elements. The band’s high energy will be sure to have everyone dancing in the streets.

Michael Dunn, Vice President of Florida Operations for the Atlanta Braves, shared, “We are thrilled to be invited by Venice MainStreet to help celebrate the start of Atlanta Braves Spring Training. Atlanta Brave legend Andruw Jones and others will be on hand to help kick off the season!”

Proceeds from this event go to two local nonprofit organizations: Venice Challenger Baseball and Venice MainStreet. Admission is $5 and kids under 12 are free. VENICE — The Artist Series continues with a Jan. 30 concert in Sarasota at Michaels on East and on Feb. 4 concert in Venice at the Plantation Golf & Country Club.

Sopranos Monica Pasquini and Rebecca Shorstein will perform with Joseph Holt on piano at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30, at Michael’s on East, 1212 S. East Ave., Sarasota Lunch will follow at 12:15 p.m.

Pasquini, a Sarasota native, is a past recipient of an Artist Series Concerts scholarship award and a musical success story. Joining Pasquini on this homecoming will be fellow coloratura soprano — and Florida native — Shorstein.

Each of these young singers has achieved worldwide individual renown and as a duet, they are known for their dynamic and innovative performances, presenting unique shows with symphony orchestras and at cabaret venues and private events across the United States and abroad.

The perform a musical smorgasbord of classical, pops and contemporary favorites that includes works by Mozart, Offenbach, Puccini, Berlin, Lloyd Webber and more.

The series will bring a Latin theme at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, to the Plantation Golf and Country Club, 500 Rockley Blvd. in Venice. The performance will be followed by lunch at 12:15 p.m.

Tunes of the Mariachi and Latin America will be performed by Guillermo López Gutiérrez, tenor; Joseph Holt on piano; and Mariachi Tampa.

The ballroom of the Plantation Golf & Country Club will be hopping with the melodies of master Mariachi musicians and singing by young spinto tenor Guillermo López Gutiérrez.

A native of Sonora, Mexico, Lopez Gutiérrez has been hailed as one of the most promising young voices in Mexico and the U.S. He has performed leading roles with festivals and with symphonies across the country and has been a featured performer with Opera Tampa and with Choral Artists of Sarasota.

One of Florida’s most sought after mariachi bands, Mariachi Tampa is probably best known as the band that’s been drawing SRO crowds to area Mi Pueblo restaurants for more than 15 years.

Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota was formed in 1996 as Artist Series of Sarasota. The non-profit organization presents world-class musical experiences in a diverse range of genres, including classical, cabaret, pop, Broadway, orchestral and opera. A central focus of Artist Series Concerts’ mission is to support the professional careers of exemplary emerging artists by presenting them to the audiences of Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Artist Series Concerts has awarded more than $300,000 to more than 80 gifted young musicians from around the country and in Sarasota and Manatee counties. The Wings of Freedom Tour Venice

Venice Airport will once again host The Wings of Freedom Tour. On display and available for walk through tours will be the B-25 Mitchell, a B-24 Liberator and P-51 Mustang.

Walk through tours are $10 adults, $5 for 12 and under. WWII vets get into the ground tours free.
