Venice starts search for architect to design a new fire station

VENICE – The City of Venice has begun the process of getting a new fire station built.

Architects being interviewed will have to create a station that includes a two-story, three-bay station with storage space, a lounge, sleeping quarters, a kitchen, and a conference room that would be open for public meetings.

The current station, next to Venice City Hall, is 45 years old, and has age-related issues like a leaky roof and mold.

The proposed new station would be hurricane-ready and allow first-responders to remain in place through most storms. It also would be built in conjunction with changes at City Hall.

Snook Haven: Restaurant is feature Exhibit at Venice Museum & Archives

Suncoast Lifestyles, www.yoursun.com, September 5, 2018

Snook Haven, as always, sits alongside the Myakka River on the far east end of Venice Avenue.

The place has had various incarnations through the years, however.

Snook Haven's storied history will be the focus of an exhibit, opening Oct 8, for the 2018-19 season, at the Venice Museum & Archives.

The title will be "Snook Haven:  The History of Movies, Mischief, and Music on the Myakka."

These days, Snook Haven is a family restaurant with tables indoors and out.  In fact, it has a relatively new, longer name:  Snook Haven Restaurant and Waterfront Park.

People sit by the water and watch alligators drift past.  They listen to live music, including banjos played by a 30-year old society of people who plunk along together at the water's edge.  They rent canoes and fish.  And they enjoy a new Sarasota County park there.

As the title of the exhibit indicates, though, Snook Haven was not always what it is now.

A few generations ago, Snook Haven was a wild and wooly Florida roadhouse at the end of a land-and-a-half wide gravel road that cut through a jungle.

Movies were made there a long time ago, too, because the scenery available made making a movie there less expensive than going to the jungles of Africa, which appear similar.

Among the tales told about Snook Haven (perhaps the exhibit will get to the truth) is that monkeys escaped from movie sets and took up residence in Sarasota County decades before the place became popular with snowbirds.  There are stories told about killer turtles too.

The Venice Museum & Archives is located at 351 Nassau Street.

Braves to open new North Port Stadium March 24 vs Rays

heraldtribune.com, August 30, 2018
Spring training finale will mark debut of Sarasota County complex
NORTH PORT — The Atlanta Braves will play their first spring training game at the new south Sarasota County complex in the West Villages at 4:05 p.m. next March 24 against the Tampa Bay Rays.
That will be the final spring training game the Braves play in Florida next spring. The team will play the remainder of its Grapefruit League home games at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, ending their 22-year run at the Disney World complex.
The Braves will open their spring training schedule on the road Feb. 23 against the New York Mets at Port St. Lucie before returning for a Feb. 25 home game in Central Florida against the Washington Nationals.
The new $100 million ballpark in the West Villages, built with a combination of funding from the Braves, North Port, Sarasota County and the state, is expected to feature 6,500 fixed seats, with the ability to accommodate another 2,500 general admission patrons on the berm and concourse.
The overall facility will include 6½ practice fields, 55,000 square feet of clubhouse and fitness center for the Braves along with multipurpose fields and public space that can be used for special events by North Port and Sarasota County.
The complex will operate year-round with extended spring training for minor league teams, Gulf Coast League and Fall Instructional League.

The March 24 game is currently being packaged along with 2020 spring training season tickets, which can be purchased at the Braves Preview Center in Cornerstone Plaza at 14906 Tamiami Trail, on the south side of the road, just west of Sumter Boulevard.
Individual tickets for the inaugural game will go on sale later this year.
For more information call 941-413-5000 or email springtraining@braves.com.
