Golf cart rules in West Villages explained at Wednesday meeting

By CRAIG GARRETT Staff Writer Jan 17, 2021

https://www.yoursun.com/northport/news/golf-cart-rules-in-west-villages-explained-at-wednesday-meeting/

NORTH PORT — Rules of the road get discussed Wednesday at the West Villages.

But not for motorists. Rather, this discussion focuses on golf cart operators, particularly kids and their parents. Neighbors had complained that children and teens on golf carts within the West Villages had been sometimes reckless, were often underage.

Others are confused about which type of golf cart is allowed where, including operators crisscrossing Tamiami Trail at the busy West Villages Parkway intersection.

North Port police, the town’s mayor and others will log into a Wednesday Zoom meeting to explain precise rules for operating a golf cart and how to modify one to make it street legal. Citywide laws get explained, as well, specifically in the West Villages, where buyers are sold the idea that golf carts are accepted transportation. But the rules were sometimes enforced, sometimes not.

Wednesday’s meeting will clear the air.

“We’re looking at this (meeting) as a safety issue. Get the information … and know,” said William Crosley, district manager for the West Villages Improvement District, the governing body within that sprawling series of neighborhoods and communities.

North Port in the last year had tweaked its golf cart rules. Some owners that included police and public officials, in fact, had plied local streets on the vehicles, some out of compliance with safety rules or with underage operators at the wheel.

North Port police interpreted the rules as not allowing basic golf carts on streets, the ones designed to haul a couple of guys and their clubs down 300-yard fairways.

Everything else was fair game, though. You could, for instance, operate modified golf carts with state-approved upgrades such as lighting, turn signals, licenses, seat belts and insurance.

And one odd rule was that a North Port golf cart dealer couldn’t rent his products. In the backdrop of all of this, some North Port retail centers had been built with designated golf cart parking spots, meaning the carts had to somehow get there.

Operating rules to reflect Florida laws were introduced. A final reading of new North Port standards is pending.

Wednesday’s virtual meeting is to explain the rules and to provide options for upgrading a golf cart. It is open to the public at westvillagesid.org.

Some in West Villages had reported kids on golf carts acting recklessly, some well under age 14, the legal limit for a regular golf cart. That and explaining the rules prompted Wednesday’s meeting, said Jill Luke, North Port’s mayor.

“Rules (for years) were not enforced,” she said. “Now there’s so much activity, this has come up.”

West Villager and golf cart owner John Meisel said kids sometimes scorn driving rules, pull one another on skateboards, race around and act … like children.

“Is it my place to police parents? No,” he said. “But most people are pretty good about it.”

'It's nice to be kind'

Anita Riska, of Venice, leaves a note that says "It's good to be kind" at the Positivity Wall at Centennial Park in Venice.

VENICE — It didn’t take long for the Positivity Walls constructed at five Venice-area locations to start sprouting statements of unity, silliness and smiles.

On Tuesday, a day after the walls were installed in and around the city, Venice resident Anita Riska was inscribing a small note and tying it to the wood.

“It’s nice to be kind,” she said, noting that’s what her saying stated on a small piece of blue paper.

Among the other sayings by Day Two: Love; Kindness to All; Breathe — It will be ok; Appreciate the things you have; Joy & Positive Thoughts; Blue Lives Matter; Buckeyes National Champs; Be the change you want in others!; Never Give Up; Love Living in Paradise; Love your beaches, hug your family, smile big, life is good!; and Hug your dog today.

Residents and visitors glanced at the walls at Venice Beach Pavilion and at Centennial Park along Venice Avenue.

The Venice Area Chamber of Commerce teamed with area businesses and governments for the walls.

The walls went up at:

• Centennial Park, 200 E. Venice Ave., Venice

• Venice Beach Pavilion, 101 The Esplanade, Venice

• Sky Family YMCA, 701 Center Road, Venice

• Laurel Civic Center, 509 Collins Road, Nokomis

• Frances T. Bourne Jacaranda Public Library, 4141 Woodmere Park Boulevard, South Venice.

“The chamber is asking the community at large to contribute to the community positivity walls,” the Venice Area Chamber of Commerce said in its news release. “Residents and visitors alike are invited to leave a positive message, a wish, or words of encouragement to share with the community. To participate, complimentary supplies can be found attached to each wall. Each wall will have a box of tags, markers and zip ties.”

The walls stay up until sometime in December until a second phase begins, involving the Venice Art Center.

SARASOTA — Allegiant Travel Company announced Thursday three new routes to major cities out of airports in Sarasota and Punta Gorda.
The company added a seasonal nonstop route to Boston out of Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport starting Nov. 19.
“Florida is an important part of Allegiant’s network, which is built around connecting people in small and medium-sized cities to vacation destinations such as Sarasota and Punta Gorda,” Allegiant Media Relations spokesperson Sonya Padgett said. “More than half of our passengers system-wide fly through the state. Because of the pandemic, we believe there will be pent-up demand for travel during the winter months, so adding these routes now will provide our customers with more options when they’re making travel plans.”
Beginning Nov. 20, Punta Gorda Airport will offer nonstop seasonal flights to Houston and Chicago.
“Southwest Floridians will be thrilled to fly with ease from Punta Gorda into these major metropolitan areas,” said Punta Gorda Airport’s CEO James W. Parish. “These new routes mark Allegiant’s first flight from PGD into the great state of Texas, and will connect thousands of Chicago’s residents to our sunny beaches and outdoor paradise.”
The new nonstop routes will operate twice weekly, flying into Boston Logan International Airport, William P. Hobby Airport in Houston and Chicago Midway International Airport.
Padgett added that the company’s health and wellness protocols are standardized across the network and are designed for maximum effectiveness.
“Travel Pulse named Allegiant the top airline for COVID-19 traveler safety measures,” Padgett said. “The air quality on our planes has always exceeded HEPA standards thanks to the VOC (volatile organic compound) filters we use. The cabin air is a mix of fresh and filtered air, which is refreshed every three minutes during flight.
Several studies show that the in-cabin air on commercial jets meets or exceeds hospital grade standards because of those on-board air filters. To better assist customers, we’ve created a landing page on our website that provides details about our cleaning program, on-board air quality and social distancing practices.”
Flight days, times and costs can be found at Allegiant.com.

Food distribution set for Saturday

Staff Report May 5, 2020

WEST VILLAGES — All Faiths Food Bank is working with two spring training facilities for upcoming food distribution events.

The events are to help those dealing with COVID-19 and take place from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. or until food runs out Saturday at CoolToday Park in West Villages and again at the same time frame May 16 at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota.

The events will occur in the parking lots: CoolToday Park is at 18800 South, West Villages Parkway, West Villages; Ed Smith Stadium is at 2700 12th St., Sarasota.

The National Guard will provide on-site assistance with the massive effort.

All Faiths is holding it largely because of the sudden unemployment in Florida, it said in a news release, with more than 900,000 residents submitting unemployment claims since mid-March.

It expects to serve up to 4,600 people at each facility, it said.

"We want area families struggling with the loss of jobs, or whose businesses that have been forced to close due to the pandemic, to know that we are here for them," All Faiths Food Bank CEO Sandra Frank said in the news release. "For many in our community, hunger is something that happens to ‘other people.’ But now, with the current state of the economy, we all know someone who has lost their job, or been forced to shutter their business, and is facing financial challenges."

It said in the news release "there will be no registration or approval process, and no collection of information on-site. Social distancing and no-touch strategies will be observed – food will be distributed via drive-thru and placed directly into the trunks of cars. Attendees will also receive information about additional Food Bank locations where groceries are available."

All Faiths has bought about 10,000 gallons of milk from Dakin Dairy Farms and produce from Florida farmers, it said.

“We’re doing everything we can to assist local farms while providing food for area residents and families negatively impacted by COVID-19,” Frank said. “Last month, the Food Bank increased produce distribution by 78% – we are pleased to have access to these healthy foods, thanks to Feeding Florida.”

The Major League Baseball teams donated the spots to assist.

“We are grateful to the management of the Atlanta Braves and Baltimore Orioles for donating the use of their spring training locations,” Frank said. “These venues offer the sheer size and infrastructure necessary for such a large effort. We are grateful they are providing such vital assistance to help community members who are struggling.”

It said COVID-19 has led to "an unprecedented spike" for food assistance.

"In the first 30 days of the crisis, the Food Bank saw a 100% increase in food distribution and a 40% increase in new clients at mobile pantry distributions. Simultaneously, costs have skyrocketed due to the loss of consumer food donations, the loss of its significant volunteer force under the stay-at-home order, and changes to food distribution, including a need for individual packaging and the move to a drive-thru/no touch model," the news release stated.

To donate, learn about other distributions or for more information, visit www.allfaithsfoodbank.org.

Braves History: One Great Season from Rogers Hornsby

https://tomahawktake.com/2020/04/02/braves-history-one-great-season-rogers-hornsby/

April 2, 2020

We look back at the history of the Braves franchise and focus in on one of the best offensive seasons in the team's history.

How many of you knew Rogers Hornsby played for the Braves? If you raised your hand, put it down, no one cares.

But if you did know, then you knew more about Braves baseball in the 20s than me. I had no clue until this morning when I started researching a historical article to write that the famous Rogers Hornsby spent time in the Braves organization.

Not only that, but in his one season with the Braves he put up the best offensive season in team historys, if you go by OWAR on Baseball Reference.

In that 1928 season with the Boston Braves, he put up an OWAR of 10.2, which again, does rank as the highest of all-time for any Braves player according to BR.

If you look at the counting numbers, they don't exactly pop out at you. He scored 99 runs, had 188 hits, 42 doubles, 7 triples, 21 home runs, 94 RBI, and stole five bags.

But then again, he also played in just 140 games that season.

However, his slashline was ridiculous at .387/.498/.632 with a 1.130 OPS.

This will be hard to believe considering the game we watch today, but he walked 107 times that season and struck out just 41 times.

Man would I love to see those days again -- not the walks, but the low number of strikeouts.

Despite having the greatest OWAR season in the history of the franchise, he finished just 13th in the MVP voting.

That probably had more to do with the fact that the Braves were 50-103 that season and he played in fewer games.

After the 1928 season he was traded to the Chicago Cubs for Bruce Cunningham, Percy Jones, Lou Legett, Freddie Maguire, Socks Seibold, and $200,000.

Remember any of those players? Probably not.

And of course, the next season Hornsby wins his second MVP award slashing .380/.459/.679 with 156 runs (156!), 47 doubles, 39 home runs, and 149 RBI.

His Cubs team that year finished first in the National League, but lost to the Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series.

I hope you all enjoyed this trip down memory lane. We'll probably be doing this a lot more often as we wait for baseball to resume.

Couple challenges residents with matching grant for Suncoast Humane Society

  •
While dogs and cats seem to be immune to coronavirus, they are not immune to the side affects.
The canine and feline residents of Suncoast Humane Society are still looking for forever homes and, because of this pandemic, they need foster homes until they can be matched with their forever people.

They still need daily care, including food, medical care when needed and clean blankets to snuggle into when dozing in their cages. Because they also need exercising, foster parents are needed now more than ever.

As all of this costs money, Elsa and Peter Soderberg have issued a challenge  to Suncoast fans, potential adopters and others. They will match donations to Suncoast, dollar for dollar up to a total of $300,000. That $600,000 goal will go a long way to save the animals in its care currently and also help cover day to day expenses during these difficult times.
Visit bit.ly/2IVJ0I9 or Text “SHS” to 26989 to help.
If you can help out as a foster parent to an animal, you can apply online at bit.ly/2UzfX2o or by phone to 941-474-7884. Suncoast will ahve someone deliver your foster pet to you.
If you want to go a step farther and adopt a cat or dog, thanks to a grant by Rich "Big Daddy" and Markie Harms, the adoption cost will be waived.
Suncoast lost 70 percent of its income because of the COVID-19 pandemic but the animals still need as much support as ever.
You can see all the animals online at humane.org. or call 941-474-7884 to make an appointment to select a new pet.
