Which Atlanta Braves benefit from this delay?

https://tomahawktake.com/2020/03/16/

by Alan Carpenter

In baseball, there are always winners and losers in the process - and timing is often vital.  So which Atlanta Braves stand to benefit from this hiatus in the season?

In sports, timing isn't everything, but it's often vital.  That much is obvious, but with multiple Atlanta Braves position battles still in progress when games were halted, things could end up being determined simply by the turn of a calendar.

Jake already noted how this layoff could harm Felix Hernandez' chances at making the rotation.  There's another aspect to his roster candidacy that may also have an mpact:  an out clause.

Veterans trying to land jobs with a new club as a non-roster invitee will often have these clauses written into their minor league deals.

Ultimately they just want to get on the field and play for somebody, and if they don't get picked up by the contracting club, these clauses give them a chance to select an alternate landing spot with another team that has a pressing need.

These clauses usually kick in during Spring Training's last week.  For example, it's known that former Brave Anthony Swarzak has a March 19 'out' date with the Phillies.

If he's not promised a roster spot, he has the right to leave the team and pursue other opportunities.  2 other Phillies' hopefuls are in the same boat with Swarzak; 2 others - including former Brave Phil Gosselin - have March 23 out dates.  So yes:  it's very common.

Whether Hernandez specifically has such a clause in his contract is a matter that has not been made public.  If so, all parties concerned would have to come together to adjust that date if there's a desire to ride out this delay; but without such action, these clauses will be coming up within the next week or so - virus or no virus.

This is simply one more way that either Sean Newcomb, Kyle Wright, or both (depending on the health of Cole Hamels) might be able to benefit from this delay.

It is possible that Atlanta might have to make a 'go/no-go' decision on Hernandez well before anyone gets out on a mound again, and right now he would almost have to be the odd man out, thus bringing the youngsters up a notch.

UPDATE:  there may be some relief coming for King Felix, others on this point...

Help for Hech

Time will tell whether this ends up being a blessing or a curse for him, but Adeiny Hechavarria was sidelined early on this Spring with oblique tightness and was just getting to the point where he could get back on the field when the plugs were pulled.

In fact, he played in weekend contests on March 7 and 8, but then didn't appear again in a another major league game after that... so absent any specific reports, there is reason to think he still wasn't whole.

Clearly, this break can help him get fully healthy again.  Unlike with Charlie Culberson, Hech's deal with the Atlanta Braves was a major league contract, and thus this delay may serve to help both him and the Braves if they don't have to give up a roster spot to add Culberson.

Obviously, that doesn't bode well for Charlie Clutch, but as we've noted, timing produces both winners and losers in the process.

The Camargo/Riley Battle

We discussed this at length during this week's podcast, but ultimately, the Spring performances for both of these players could end up landing both of them in Atlanta.

Right now the scuttlebutt is about an expectation of a 2-weeks Spring Training extension prior to the launch of a regular season... whenever that happens.  In 2 weeks, there's simply not enough time to change the minds of any coaches about any position... thus, if there's players who have already made solid impressions... they could have the jobs handed to them.

It's generally our take that both Johan Camargo and Austin Riley have done enough good work to earn spots on the club.  On top of that, both are also on the 40-man roster, so it's hardly a stretch to suggest that the easy way out for the Atlanta Braves is to put both on the active roster... and then figure things out from there.

It's certainly the best option for the club offensively, and neither are hurting defensively, so after that, it's more of a matter of figuring out how best to use them.

So in this instance, it isn't that the extra time off helps one or the other; rather it might be that it doesn't permit either to falter from the perch both have been riding.

It may not transpire in this manner, but from where we sit... it's hard to see how the Braves are a better club by taking only one.

So sure:  these players would all rather be on the field now, but having extra days off is not always a bad thing.

North Port plans rally to welcome Braves to North Port

https://www.heraldtribune.com/news/20200213/north-port-plans-rally-to-welcome-braves-to-north-port
By Earl Kimmel, staff writer
Feb 13, 2020

On the eve of CoolToday Park hosting the Governor’s Baseball Dinner, North Port will throw a party to toast the Atlanta Braves.

NORTH PORT — The city of North Port celebrates the Atlanta Braves opening its first full Grapefruit League season with “The BIG Rally,” from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, at the City Center Front Green.

“I’m looking forward to it and it’s going to be great,” North Port Mayor Debbie McDowell said. “Last year we only had the one game, as you know, and this year it’s a full season.

“We have to welcome them for the full season and we have to do it up right,” she later added. “Basically we’re throwing out a big huge welcome mat for the Braves North Port style.”

The Braves played one game at CoolToday Park in 2019 — a 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on March 24, 2019, and the city partnered with San Pedro Catholic Church to honor the Braves at the church’s annual community festival.

This year, the city is in a position to embrace the national spotlight that comes with hosting a Major League Baseball spring training site — especially when it’s the newest site in the country and host to the Braves, one of the sport’s storied franchises.

CoolToday Park and the Braves will also host the Florida Sports Foundation’s 2020 Governor’s Baseball Dinner Sunday night, with Gov. Ron DeSantis, who played baseball at Yale University and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred heading up a star-studded guest list.

McDowell and other city officials anticipate some of those luminaries stopping by Saturday’s rally — maybe even visiting the North Port Area Chamber of Commerce-sponsored 34th annual Business and Community Expo, which from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the George Mullen Activity Center, which is adjacent to the city hall campus.

Parking at the City Hall, which is located at 4970 City Hall Boulevard, is anticipated to be limited for the event, so shuttle busses will run from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. between the event and Heron Creek Middle School, 6501 W Price Blvd., North Port.

North Port resident Emanne Beasha, of America’s got Talent fame, will open up festivities with the national anthem.

Retired Atlanta Braves players Mike Bielecki and Michael Tucker will sign autographs in the Braves tent from 1 to 3 p.m.

Bielecki, had three separate stints with the Braves between 1991 and 1997, and was a member of the 1996 World Series team.

In 1988, as a member of the Chicago Cubs, he pitched the first night game ever at Wrigley Field, and was an 18-game winner in 1989, when he finished ninth in the Cy Young Award voting.

Tucker had the most productive season of his 12-year Major League Baseball career with the Braves in 1997, when he hit .283, scored 80 runs and logged 141 hits.

A pep rally will feature the local Little League, North Port schools, bands and local dignitaries.

Ari and the Alibis will perform live music.

In another anticipated spectator event, at 2:45 p.m, dachshunds will race in categories based on their age in a 30-foot outdoor station to compete for the title of “North Port’s top Dox.”

Other activities include a giant inflatable demolition game, inflatable tomahawk throw, and speed pitch station.

A variety of vendors will sell food and beverages, while the Rotary Club of North Port Central will be selling beer and wine (ID required).

The Braves open off their 17-game Grapefruit League home schedule at 1:05 p.m., Feb. 22 against the Baltimore Orioles at Cool Today Park, 18800 S. West Villages Parkway, North Port.

Another significant highlight for North Port residents will be the March 21 game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, when North Port Parks & Rec and the city of North Port will host North Port Community Night.

Gates open at 4 p.m., with the game starting at 6:05 p.m.

There are 500 reserved seats available only to North Port residents in Section 124 at a cost of $15 each. Those seats are not assigned and parking at CoolToday is $10 per vehicle.

McDowell, an avid baseball fan, has fond memories of taking her children to spring training games in Sarasota to watch the White Sox, Charlotte County to watch the Rays, and looks forward to the types of memories area families will forge both watching the Braves spring training games and the Florida Fire Frogs, the Class A team that will call CoolToday home.

“My kids, to this day still talk about those memories,” McDowell said. “You cannot put a price tag on the memories created at a baseball field.

“They got Nolan Ryan’s autograph — that is a memory you cannot quantify, that is baseball,” she added. “For the individual, it’s all about the memories that are created by the baseball field.”

SOUTH VENICE — It’s been a year since the Sarasota County commissioners last heard about or acted upon the South County courthouse project.

But during that year, county staff and the design team have been busy, as commissioners learned Tuesday. They received an update on the project, which will kick into high gear in 2020.

The plans call for the construction of a new, six-courtroom facility at the R.L. Anderson Administration Complex, where a parking lot exists on the south side.

That parking lot will be moved to the north side of the complex replacing the pond at the front of the site.

Although six courtrooms are planned, only four will be built out, with the other two rooms used for other purposes until future expansion is needed. Court Administration, the clerk of the circuit court and the sheriff will also have space in the new building.

Upon completion of the courthouse, renovations will begin in the R.L. Anderson building with Planning and Development Services and the Health Department moving to the second floor, where courtrooms currently exist.

The tax collector, supervisor of elections, property appraiser and veterans’ services will all remain on the first floor. Commission chambers will be unaffected by the move.

New offices for the state attorney and public defender will be installed in the annex building behind commission chambers where Planning and Development Services is currently located.

A groundbreaking for the estimated $32 million project is tentatively planned for April 2020.

Brad Gaubatz, the county’s manager of capital projects, told commissioners Tuesday because of the complexity of the project, including the planned moves for existing offices, county staff and the design team have planned for careful sequencing of events to maintain the timeline for the construction project.

For 12 years the county has sought ways to improve the delivery of judicial services in South County, recognizing both the growth in the area and that the courtroom facilities on the second floor do not meet modern operational standards.

After many fits and starts and working with current occupants at the complex along with the South County Bar Association and the Audubon Society, county staff developed a plan that met with everyone’s satisfaction.

“We’re very happy that we’re planning for the next 20 or 30 years,” Steve Boone, a member of the South County Bar Association, told commissioners in 2018 when they approved the initial plans. “The need for full court services is not going away. They will continue to be needed.”

“People are very, very excited to get it going,” Commissioner Charles Hines said Tuesday.
