heraldtribune.com, August 30, 2018
Spring training finale will mark debut of Sarasota County complex
NORTH PORT — The Atlanta Braves will play their first spring training game at the new south Sarasota County complex in the West Villages at 4:05 p.m. next March 24 against the Tampa Bay Rays.
That will be the final spring training game the Braves play in Florida next spring. The team will play the remainder of its Grapefruit League home games at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, ending their 22-year run at the Disney World complex.
The Braves will open their spring training schedule on the road Feb. 23 against the New York Mets at Port St. Lucie before returning for a Feb. 25 home game in Central Florida against the Washington Nationals.
The new $100 million ballpark in the West Villages, built with a combination of funding from the Braves, North Port, Sarasota County and the state, is expected to feature 6,500 fixed seats, with the ability to accommodate another 2,500 general admission patrons on the berm and concourse.
The overall facility will include 6½ practice fields, 55,000 square feet of clubhouse and fitness center for the Braves along with multipurpose fields and public space that can be used for special events by North Port and Sarasota County.
The complex will operate year-round with extended spring training for minor league teams, Gulf Coast League and Fall Instructional League.

The March 24 game is currently being packaged along with 2020 spring training season tickets, which can be purchased at the Braves Preview Center in Cornerstone Plaza at 14906 Tamiami Trail, on the south side of the road, just west of Sumter Boulevard.
Individual tickets for the inaugural game will go on sale later this year.

Northport Commission to hear update on Warm Mineral Springs Master Plan

      Herald Tribune, August 31, 2018

NORTH PORT — The city of North Port is planning for the future of the 83-acre park surrounding Warm Mineral Springs.
While public input will be taken through meetings tentatively scheduled for Sept. 18-20, the North Port City Commission will be updated at a Sept. 6 special meeting on the project, as well as review a draft of the proposal to nominate the structures for the National Register of Historic Places at the park that were first put in place for the 1959 Florida Quadricentennial.
The structures have deteriorated from lack of maintenance. The cost to renovate or restore them has been estimated anywhere from $2.4 million to $2.9 million.
The city put the structures on its first historic register in March 2017, and has been working with the state historic preservation office to have them included on the national register.
The springs themselves, the site’s centerpiece, were listed on the state register in 1977.
The structures, designed by architect Jack West, a member of the Sarasota School of Architecture, were built in the late 1950s as part of a 21.6-acre “springs activity center” for the quadricentennial.
Two of the structures, a sales building and restaurant and spa building, are joined by a covered walkway, or pergola, and are considered by some as one site.
At 10,345 square feet and 225 feet long, it approximates the depth of the hourglass-shaped springs.
City officials have gone back and forth over the best way to handle renovation and restoration of that part of the complex.
The third building, a cyclorama, was considered by the City Commission to be the obvious jewel of the site, when the local historic register was created.

The Warm Mineral Springs cyclorama is one of an estimated 30 left in the world and only three in the United States. Two of those, in Atlanta and Gettysburg, depict Civil War battles.
The North Port cyclorama tells the story of Juan Ponce de Leon’s exploration of Florida, in search of the Fountain of Youth.
The buildings operated as a tourist attraction from March 1960 to 2000, before being temporarily closed.
The springs reopened for swimming in 2014.
All that is detailed in the draft application to the National Register of Historic Places.
The city has owned the springs since September 2014, when it purchased Sarasota County’s interest in the facilities. It pays $48,280 a month to operate the park and receives all revenue from admission sales.
An archaeological background report, prepared by Tampa-based Janus Research for the Sept. 6 meeting, notes two sites. The springs itself, which is hourglass-shaped and has a burial site located 42 feet below the surface, on a ledge, is the main one.
A second site, a sandy ridge about 650 feet south of the springs, appears to be a place that stone tool maintenance occurred — based on the size and number of small stone flakes uncovered in shovel tests.
The city hopes to develop the adjacent 60-plus acres for other recreational use through the master plan.
      Interested?
      • The North Port City Commission will receive an update on the Warm Mineral Springs master plan process at a special meeting which starts at 1 p.m., Sept. 6, in commission chambers at North Port City Hall, 4970 City Hall Blvd. For more information on the park, visit cityofnorthport.com/visitors/visit-north-port/warm-mineral-springs-park.

10 Great Parks and Preserves in Sarasota-Bradenton-Venice

      Herald Tribune, August 23, 2018

There are many beautiful places in Sarasota and Manatee counties beyond the beaches.  While Sarasota and Manatee counties' most famous attractions are the beaches, we also have alluring parks
and preserves.  Let's revisit 10 of our favorites, presented in alphabetical order.

      Bradenton Riverwalk
      452 Third Ave. W., Bradenton;941-621-6471 realizebradeton.com

Cool off in the interactive splash fountain, have fun in the state-of-the-art skate park, play some beach volleyball, observed nature in the tidal discovery zone, use the fishing pier or bring your boat to the 20-slip day dock.  The 1.5 mile-long-park along the Manatee River in downtown Bradenton also offers plenty of shaded benches and water fountains designed for humans and dogs.

      Celery Fields
      6893 Palmer Blvd, Sarasota;941-861-5000;scgov.net

Officially named "Celery Fields Regional Stormwater Facility", the more than 360-acre area owned by Sarasota County and used to collect storm water is home to the Sarasota Audubon Nature Center.  A first-rate spot for viewing numerous bird species, the park also offers unpaved trails and boardwalks for hiking and jogging.

      Deer Prairie Creek Preserve
      10201 South Tamiami Trail, Venice;941-861-5000;sc.gov.net

This giant swath of countryside along the Myakka River has more than 70 miles of hiking trails, which are unpaved but accessible for most visitors.  While walking the trails through the 6,439-acre preserve, look for gopher tortoises, alligators, river otters, wild turkeys, swallow-tailed kites, Florida scrub-jays and an assortment of wading birds among the numerous flowering plants.

      Emerson Point Preserve
      5801 17th St W, Palmetto;941-721-6885;mymanatee.org

At the tip of Snead Island in western Palmetto, Emerson Point hugs the mouth of the Manatee River where it meets lower Tampa Bay, allowing visitors to explore shady trails through a tropical setting rich in history.  The preserve is where you'll find the Portavant Temple Mound, southwest Florida's largest native American temple mound.  You'll also want to visit the observation tower.

      Jelks Preserve
      2300 N River Road, Venice;941-861-5000;sc.gov.net

This preserve borders the Myakka River with eight miles of trails, including the 3.3-mile outer loop trail.  While exploring, look for diverse hammocks, pine flatwoods and seasonal wetlands.  You can also observe gopher tortoises, swallowtail butterflies and swallow-tailed kites plus an assortment of songbirds and wildflowers.

      Phillippi Estate Park
      5500 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota;941-861-5000;scgov.net

Nestled south of downtown Sarasota and east of Siesta Key, Phillippi Estate Park on the shores of Phillippi Creek offers 60 acres filled with environmental and historic attractions such as the Edson Keith Mansion, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Paths lead from the mansion to a playground and dock overlooking the creek.  There's also a short trail that heads into the woods along Little Sarasota Bay.

      Myakka River State Park
      13208 State Road 72, 941-361-6511;floridastateparks.org

This massive nature preserve east of Sarasota draws both locals and tourists from around the world.  The many things to do include cycling, renting a cabin or tent camping with the canopy walk providing one of the best views in the area, while taking a nature tour by boat of Upper Myakka Lake is pretty awesome, too.  There's also Deep Hole, home to dozens of huge alligators.

      Oscar Scherer State Park
      1843 South Tamiami Trail, Osprey;941-483-5956;floridastateparks.org

There are 12 miles of trail through the pines and palmettos of Oscar Scherer State Park including the popular and wheelchair-accessible Lester Finley Nature Trail that follows South Creek near the  entrance to the Osprey park.  For those who prefer paddling to walking, canoeing is another fun option.

      Robinson Preserve
      1704 99th St., NW, Bradenton;941-742-5923;mymanatee.org

Located in northwestern Bradenton with multiple entrances, the 682-acre preserve of mangrove, tidal marsh, and former agricultural lands features a 1.55-mile rubberized pedestrian-only trail (jog it twice and you've done a 5K), kayak launches, trails, restrooms, picnic areas, an observation tower overlooking Tampa Bay as well as The Mosaic Center for Nature, Exploration, Science and Technology (NEST).

      Rothenbach Park
      8650 Bee Ridge Road;Sarasota;941-861-5000;scgov.net

This park is best known for its 2.75 mile bike loop that circles a 90-foot capped landfill mound, a path that winds through palmettos and oaks dripping with Spanish moss.   There are also two playground areas with safe equipment that sits on top of a soft mulch surface so children can run and jump with reduced risk of injury.  The park has a pavilion, too, that includes restrooms, picnic tables and grills.

      Gran Paradiso Food Drive

Gran Paradiso at the West Villages, activity news
      20061 Galleria Boulevard
      Venice

The Gran Paradiso Resident Volunteers Group is having a food drive.

With a new school year beginning, most, if not all of the school's pantry shelves are empty.  These pantries are a way to ensure that every child gets something to eat during the school year.  This is especially important over the weekends when school provided meals are not available to those who need them most.

The residents of Gran Paradiso generously support the needs of the students at the Atwater Elementary School in North Port.  They do so through sponsorship of fundraising events for the All Faith's Food Bank's school backpack program and through direct food donations to the school pantry.

For this new school year they are having a much needed food drive to help rebuild the schools pantry.  All non perishable items may be dropped off at the Gran Paradiso Clubhouse thru Friday, September 7.
